City Block Construction (Geometry):

Description: City construction project is hands on project that involves higher level thinking. Students design creative building using various polygons. They create a layout (map) of a city using a Microsoft PowerPoint and publisher. Students have an option to make a three dimensional model of their city using construction paper. Finally students will calculate the area and perimeter of each building. Not only students enjoy working on this project but they also learn a great deal of mathematics.

Skills incorporated:
  1. Measurement
  2. Scale factor (Converting units and Ratios)
  3. Three dimensional drawing
  4. Calculating the area of various polygons
  5. Calculating the perimeter of various polygons

Garden Bed Project (Geometry)

Description: You are designing a garden bed, to allow people to grow fresh vegetables, flowers, fruit and herbs year round, with minimal extra heating or cooling. Your design needs to be well planned out in order to maximize the area while utilizing all material. Support all reasoning through sound mathematical evidence.

Skills incorporated:

  1. Measurement
  2. Scale factor (Converting units and Ratios)
  3. Two dimensional drawing
  4. Calculating the area and volume
  5. Unit conversion

Piecewise function design (Algebra 2)

Description: The goal is to create an elegant design on a coordinate plane using various piecewise functions. You may use either string of linear functions, quadratic functions, absolute value function, or any other functions of your choice.

Skills incorporated:
  1. Writing linear, quadratic, and absolute value function.
  2. Graphing linear, quadratic and absolute value function.
  3. Writing and graphing piecewise function with appropriate domain.

Building kites project (Geometry)

Description: Your goal is to construct a kite from scratch using the properties of kites you learned in geometry class. There are various types of kites but your kite should be the shape of rhombus. You may use any resource available to you including the internet, library to find direction on building a kite.

Skills incorporated:

  1. Measurement
  2. Properties of kites
  3. Area of triangles
  4. Area of kites and perimeter of kites.
